By Sandy Snore

If you think snoring is not a serious issue, go ahead and ask those who live and sleep with a snorer. For sure, they'll be willing to spend top dollars just to find a way for their bed partner to stop snoring!

Snoring is clearly not something to be taken lightly. Although most adults snore occasionally, and a fifth of the adult American population are considered as habitual snorers, snoring should not be left untreated. It can have some very serious physical and social repercussions both for the snorer and their spouses. For the snorer, it can have lasting life-threatening complications such as hypertension, diabetes, erectile dysfunction, heart disease and stroke.

As for his or her bed partner, snoring can cause sleep deprivation, daytime fatigue, headaches, and mood swings, among others. Worse, it can even lead to the breakdown of the relationship! In fact, there are a lot of documented cases of spouses ending up in separate bedrooms because of habitual snoring.

So, how do you put snoring under control? Are expensive surgeries the only way out? Well, it may surprise you but there are a lot of other ways to stop the snoring problem from ruining your health and your relationship! Here are some useful tips you can consider to keep the volume down:

Make a change for the better. Consider changing your lifestyle. Eat the right kinds of foods and eat smaller portions to lose some excess weight. Start avoiding foods that contain high amounts of fat, calories, sugar and salt and develop a taste for low fat varieties and leaner alternatives. Stay away from caffeine and alcohol, too. For all you know, these may be all you need to stop snoring.

You can also ask your doctor if you are fit to embark on a regular exercise routine. This will not only put an end to your snoring problems, it will also improve your general well-being as well. And there are also some exercises designed especially to tone up your tongue and throat muscles. These can definitely help!

Try using oral appliances. There are several mouthpieces that can help you stop snoring. This includes the tongue retraining appliance that holds your tongue in place as you sleep or the mandibular advancement appliance (MAA) that helps keep your jaw in position to prevent obstructing the flow of air as they pass through the air passageways.

Try alternative treatments. There are some alternative therapies that claim to help put a stop to snoring. You can try relaxation techniques such as yoga and tai chi to see if they'll work for you.
