Should You Buy an Exercise Bike or Treadmill?

By Ron Higgins

You'll find that the majority of at-home gyms will have an exercise bike, treadmill, or sometimes both. Both have their benefits and drawbacks, which is the reason for their almost - emphasis on almost - similar popularity. In comparing the two, is one more advantageous than the other?

Sticking to the Fitness Regiment

One of the predominant problems of trying to do your workouts at home is keeping on top of the exercise regiment. After all, there are no personal trainers to provide encouragement, instruction and help as well as other gym bums to gossip with. In short, you may just fall prey to the clutches of boredom.

So, let's compare the fun levels on a treadmill versus on a stationary bike. Using a treadmill, you are only able to walk and run, two activities that you perform in the normal course of activities and that might not be as exciting. Of course, you have the option to change the speed and the slant on a treadmill but still, it perhaps will not be as entertaining as you are hoping for.

An exercise bike allows you to do other activities while you're working out. You are able to easily do other things, such as reading a great book, watching television shows, listening to uplifting songs and even watching the everything around you, since you're not jumping up and down on your feet. Now, look at that versus running on a treadmill. Because an exercise bike offers you the chance to do other activities to keep you interested, there's less of a chance that you'll get bored and give up on your routine.

Shout Bye-bye to Calories

It's true that studies have recognized that the treadmill burns more calories than the stationary bike with all other things being equal. Typically using the treadmill sheds 750 calories each hour while the stationary bike only burns 550 calories.

Is the treadmill the best option since it helps you shed more calories faster? Well, not inevitably as these stats are just one fraction of the complete equation.

If you don't use the treadmill as often as you would use the exercise bike, then it is but logical that the bike will give you more opportunities to burn calories. Due to it's great appeal, the exercise bike is triumphant yet again.

Safety Issues in Usage

This is probably the most critical comparison merely because you exercise to attain a healthier body, not one that is injured from exercise itself. Again, the exercise bike wins over the treadmill in the safety of usage area for two reasons.

When looking at the impact of each machine, the treadmill has a higher impact than the bike. This is because your feet constantly pound down on the floor of the treadmill yet in the stationary bike, your feet stay put on the pedals. Another safety concern is that you are more in danger of stumbling off the treadmill than with a stationary bike. When you're using a treadmill, you've got to keep your balance the entire time.
