The Things You Should Know About Hypnosis

By Ashley Cox

Hypnosis and its arm, hypnotherapy, have been the focus of a lot of misconceptions created by layman's imagination. Some consider them to be black magic whereas others discard them as pseudo science. Some of the common misconceptions associated with hypnosis and the truth behind them are given below.

Hypnosis has nothing to do with black magic of any kind. It hinges more on the science of the human mind and is very simple to practice for anyone who is prepared to learn it. People refuse to believe in hypnosis even after seeing participants successfully undergoing it in public sessions. They say that hypnotised subjects allow practitioners to be successful in their art by not displaying enough will power to withstand the effect of their words. But that is not true at all. Hypnosis can in fact work on people who are mentally strong and are trying hard to block the spell.

Another belief is that hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness, which again is a serious misconception. A hypnotized individual is fully alert of what is going on in his surroundings. Hypnosis actually brings forth a state of absolute calm characterized by a growth in levels of concentration, and this heightened sensitivity helps the subject to receive suggestions with considerable ease.

Some scientists have found that hypnosis works on just 5% of the world's population, and this is another prevalent myth. The researchers are somewhat true in their own way, because they tried hypnotising their subjects by the same hypnosis method without acknowledging individual differences in nature and disposition. Hypnosis can't be oversimplified like that and clicks only if there are different methodologies for different personality styles.

Many people consider hypnosis to be a form of meditation. But while hypnosis is a communication technique, meditation is all about a state of mind and usually has no communication involved in the process. The state of trance is not a hypnotic state either. Just like meditation, trance is a state of mind, and it is not linked with communication in any manner, on the other hand the very crux of the hypnosis technique is communication.

Another misconception is that physical and behavioural changes in an individual are not attainable through hypnosis training or hypnotherapy. Hypnosis obviously cannot attain something that is unnatural to the body. However, it can propel the body to a better shape through behavioural transformations like eating less, and quitting smoking and other addictive habits by ensuring a good amount of of motivation in an individual.

Experiencing hypnotherapy is a good way to lead a richer and satisfying life, and thus one must not pay heed to the misconceptions, and go for hypnotic sittings with an open mind.
